Happy New Year

IMG_0450A new year is akin to new beginnings. It’s a fresh start. A chance to look back on what happened in your life the previous year and plan out what you want to do different in the new year.

There are people who make New Year’s Resolutions every year with great success; people who make resolutions every year but time goes by and the resolutions fade away; and people who don’t make resolutions because they don’t believe in them or they don’t think they will be successful. I get it. We don’t like to set ourselves up for failure. We like success and a sense of accomplishment.

As I sat this morning with my brand new planner for 2018, full of blank pages and possibilities, I got to thinking. New Year’s Resolutions are exciting, but a year is a long time to keep the focus. Every day life swoops in and takes over the focus. I’ve set goals for myself that fizzled out by March.

This year I am going to try something different. I’m going to set a goal (or two) for each month. With an average of 30 days in a month, I believe this is something that will help me keep my focus.

For example, I want to read more books during 2018. But instead of seeing how many books I can read throughout the whole year, and putting it off because it’s only January, I’m going to challenge myself to see how many books I can read (that I’ve been wanting to read) during the month of January. I used to read a lot, but with the advancement of technology, I find myself becoming distracted by that technology and wasting my time.

If you are the type of person that likes to set New Year’s Resolutions, or you’re thinking about doing it this year, aim to set yourself up for success. Remember that there is not only one way to do it, pick something that works for YOU.

Feel free to follow along with my reading goal. I added a tab at the top of my blog called “Books Read in 2018” where I’ll log my accomplishments. Cheers to 2018!
